One of the biggest retirement planning mistakes I see Canadians make is waiting too long to withdraw from their RRSPs.
On the surface, it feels logical. Many retirees think, “I’ll leave my RRSP alone as long as possible, defer converting it to a RRIF until age 71, and only take money when I’m forced to.”
The problem is that this can create a much bigger tax issue later.
By age 71, your RRSP must be converted to a RRIF, annuity, or withdrawn in cash, and RRIF minimum withdrawals begin the year after the RRIF is set up. The minimum withdrawal percentage rises as you get older, which means the older you are, the more taxable income you may be forced to take from your RRIF.
